Champions event to Gomez

NZPA-AFP Forest Hills, New York The fourth seed, Andres Gomez, of Ecuador, won the 51.07 M tennis Tournament of Champions at Forest Hills yesterday when he beat the No. 2 seed and defending champion, Yannick Noah, of France, 6-4, 7-6, 7-6. Gomez, who beat the top seed, Boris Becker, of West Germany, in the semi-finals, was sharper around the court and more combative on the decisive points, winning the tie-breaks 7-5 and 7-1 respectively. The final lasted two hours 45 minutes and attracted a crowd of more than 14,000. The Argentinian teenager, Guillermo Perez-Roldan, toppled a fellow giant-killer, Marian Vajda, of Czechoslovakia, to take the Bavarian Open title at Munich, the first grand prix win of his short career.

Perez-Roldan, aged 17, showed he was not overawed by the occasion, notching a comortable 6-3, 7-6 victory in the final in 97 minutes.

Vajda, aged 22, who also upset the form book by ousting the second-seeded Johan Kriek, of the United States, and Sweden’s Joakim Nystrom, had little answer to the Argentinian’s accurate topspin game and greater fitness.
