Paris in transition
PARIS design ideas are in transition. Racy stretch jersey sheaths from the body-con-scious school competed at the spring/summer collections for attention with new no-waist dresses. It happened too in the 1950 s when the A-line, “tent” and “trapeze” dresses supplanted Dior’s waspish post-war “New Look.” Some of the new looser dresses add 1960 s influences (baby-doll shortness, halter necks) to add up to something contemporary. The conflicting design strategies saw the waist watchers revive the
corselet. Wide corselet belts went! with yoked dresses gathered ,/apd! tucked through the bustline. Frillsand peplums peeped from beneath* the corselet. Bubble skirts andbloomers were evening looks for the' young. . ; ,y : Smart city suits had short skirts and long jackets. For the woman: who will not wear a skirt above the knee, graceful longer skirts were shown as were a few wider-legged pants.
