Double ‘Carry On’ treat

There is a double tonic in store for fans of the seemingly timeless “Carry On” films. Kerridge Odeon Amalgamated Video has dished up a double dose of mirth on one tape with two of the long-standing favourites from this series of comedy films. “Carry On Doctor” (PG). Good health, according to Francis Bigger, is the triumph of mind over matter. “What is mind? It doesn’t matter. What is matter? Never mind.” Francis’s creed deserts him after being admitted to the Borough County Hospital. He joins a motley collection of fellow patients and finds the hospital is staffed by a far from normal team of doctors and nurses. There’s an epidemic of trouble, hippocratic oaths are forgotten, tempers fray, abuse is hurled ... when the patients revolt. Starring Frankie Howerd,

Kenneth Williams, Barbara Windsor, Charles Hawtrey, Joan Sims, Sid James and Hattie Jacques. “Carry On Again Doctor” (PG). Dr James Nookey falls foul of Dr Frederick Carver, that eminent surgeon who is a cut above the others. Sent off to a remote medical mis-

sion, he meets up with a medical orderly (Gladstone Screwer) who holds the formula for a weird witch doctor’s potion capable of slimming an overweight person faster than a melting snowball. Nookey knows he has found a winner and shoots off to market it and make a fortune. He joins forces with Mrs Ellen Moore to form the Moore-Nookey Clinic, where he collects surplus pounds. from patients with burdensome bank accounts — much to the fury of Dr Carver, who has always coveted this kind of clinic. Total running time of this double feature is 173 minutes. Also from K.0.A.V.: “The Silent One” (G). The Silent One is Jonasi, a uniquely gifted young man sent from the sea as a baby to grow up in an isolated Pacific village. Separated from the villagers by his silence and their prejudices, he finds

solace in his underwater world, where he develops a special relationship with a huge white turtle. However, both Jonasi and the turtle are seen as evil spirits by the superstitious villagers. A series of natural disasters and a struggle for leadership within the village sweep Jonasi toward his strange destiny. Running time 92 minutes. “Wheels On Meals” (PG). Two adventurous young men are working hard to make a living in Barcelona, selling food from the van. In the same city, another man ends up holding all the bills when his boss’s private-eye company goes bankrupt. Through a series of hilarious incidents the three meet for a fast moving, action-packed adventure in sunny Barcelona. Starring Jackie Chan and Herb Edelman. Running time 90 minutes.
