Violent crime
Sir, —Punishment is not enough to deter violent offenders; the causes must be attacked. As well as most of the road carnage, males aged from 15 to 24 commit most of it Such behaviour shows up by the age of 10 so we need an early start to prevent this. Right attitudes towards others are learnt at home and school. They do not seem to be getting them. Ink on the violent offenders bill is hardly dry, yet we are told crime rates are rising in areas that have suffered disasters or increased unemployment. At the time that New Zealand, led the world in its employment figures, its crime rate was low. Graphs could be drawn to show this fact and the public would be better informed. Emphasis is on the wrong place. There is no quick easy answer and scapegoat hunting will not cure this social ill. — Yours, etc., A. M. COATES. May 10, 1987.
