Aust. posts further rise

NZPA-AAP ' Sydney Continued demand for resource stocks pushed the Australian sharemarket higher yesterday for the fourth consecutive session. Overseas investors returned to the market after two days absence and joined the queue for heavyweight miners such as WMC and North Broken Hill and selected gold stocks. Oil and gas issues also continued to rise, led by a 50c gain in Hartogen. National turnover was a moderate 176.5 million shares worth sAust233.lM. Rises outnumbered falls by a narrow margin. Investors hopeful of positive results from Hartogen’s Sentry Bank Reef 1A well near the Philippines scrambled for stock, pushing the price up to 470. It reached a high of 495 in the morning session. Hartogen’s associates, Genoa and Consolidated Petroleum, gained 20c to 460 and 3c to 58 respectively. Ampol Exploration added 20c to 520 and Oil Search 5 to 145.

Moage, Ltd, gained 15c to 115 as 2.8 M shares changed hands. Rivkin James Capel specialed 2.2 M shares at 100 c each. In the resources area Western Mining, trading exbonus, rose 25c to 760 on heavy turnover, North Broken Hill advanced 30c to 1980 and CRS 5 to 1085 c. BHP started strongly, rising to 980 in the morning session,

but came off to finish 4 down at 956. Profit-taking increased in the gold sector following an overnight fall in the bullion price of SUS 4. However, overseas investors in particular targeted a few selected stocks, which made strong gains. Elders Resources jumped 65c to 420, Forsayth added 40c to 730 and Emperor 10c to 1010, while Sons of Gwalia slumped 100 to 1420, Kidston 40 to 880 and Metana 30 to 1620.
