Built to complement the high technology of the firm, the new headquarters at Unisys-LINC offers an outstanding indication of the type of work carried out within its confines.
Water tumbling from the first storey into a ground level pond, marbled tiled planters with curved seating inside a spacious atrium give the new building an almost Garden of Eden look. The architect, lan Krause, said the building had to be one which was pleasing and tranquil to ensure the best conditions for the type of work being carried out inside. “We had been involved from the very start with LINC so we understood what were the ideal conditions for these people to work in and also the high
profile the company had taken up in the international market.
“What we set but to do was create the best possible environment for the people working while also producing a building which at a glance depicted the high tech world of computers and their place in the twenty-first century. “This basic knowledge made the job so much easier for us,” Mr Krause said.
The building is characterised by crisp lines, mirrored glass and white walls. One of the most interesting and functional areas of the complex is the atrium, the pivotal point of the building. With the marble-tiled planters and waterfall as a backdrop, this area covers as a function hall as well as a place for employees to sit and recharge their thoughts. A hydraulic platform
which overlooks the area can be used as a stage for speakers or an orchestra while a sophisticated lighting sound system has been put in place to cover any occasion. A glassed-in lift moves between the floors of the atrium.
The new complex provides 66 offices for LINC product development as well as conference and training rooms for the many seminars that are held for both New Zealand and international guests.
The offices have been set around the periphery of the building to give everyone an outside view. The offices are of similar size and are close to entertaining facilities. “The object of giving the employees an excellent environment in which to work cannot be overstated,” Mr Krause said. The total cost. for the building and furnishing was about $6.5 million.
