Mrs Hercus ‘an excellent model’
The retiring member of Parliament for Lyttelton and Cabinet Minister, Mrs Hercus, has been an excellent role model for young women, says the women’s officer for the Labour Youth Council, Ms Cathy Bennet. The Youth Council, a wing of the Labour Party, yesterday congratulated Mrs Hercus on her achievements during her term in Parliament. Mrs Hercus had shown herself to be an “extremely capable and effective representative and Cabinet Minister” as well as being an “excellent role model for any young
woman interested in public life,” said Ms Bennet. “She handled difficult portfolios, including the male-dominated police administration, with strength and efficiency.”
While the Youth Council was sad to see a Minister of Mrs Hercus’s calibre retiring, it respected her decision and wished her well for the future, Ms Bennet said. Although Mrs Hercus was retiring, in contrast to the National Party, Labour still had “many capable women members of Parliament to consider for future Cabinet positions,” Ms Bennet said.
