More women employed
Wellington
Restructuring of the economy had opened up new prospects of employment and promotion for women in the workforce since 1984, said the Minister of Finance, Mr Douglas, yesterday. About 46,000 extra women had found employment between August, 1984, and November, 1986. The percentage of women working had risen from 50 per cent to 54 per cent in that period, he said.
While women had moved into employment across the board in the econoiriy, they made fastest progress in the boom-
ing financial sector, he said.
“(The number of) Women employed, in the finance sector rose 22 per cent in that period, against an 11 per cent increase for men in a very demanding area where quality of work is crucial.”
A “significant" 6.5 per cent increase had also occurred in the number of women working proprietors, during a period when the number of male working proprietors declined slightly. Across the economy as a whole, the number of women in employment grew 8 per cent in the 27 months from August, 1984, the Government’s first month in power.
