Policy under attack
NZPA London New Zealand’s defence policy came under strong attack from Conservative members in the House of Commons last Friday. , The Minister of Agriculture, Mr Jopling, agreed that many British farmers felt New Zealand had no further claim to their market because of the Labour Government’s anti-nuclear stance, according to a report in “The Times.” Mr Robin Maxwell-Hys-lop, Conservative member for Tiverton, was cheered by fellow Conservatives when he said, “As New Zealand has reneged on her defence commitments she has no further claim to part of our market for agricultural products.” Mr Nicholas Winterton, Conservative member for Macclesfield, asked if it was fair that Mr Jopling and other Government Ministers should make great play about the United Kingdom dairy industry’s contribution to dairy surpluses when Britain had to accept about 76,000 tonnes of New Zealand butter.
