Pups killed to comply with club rules
NZPA London Thousands of healthy Dalmatian puppies have been killed to satisfy membership rules of Britain’s three Dalmatian dog owners’ clubs. The discovery has outraged the governing body in British canine affairs, the Kennel Club, which has ordered that the membership rules be suspended. The clubs had refused to allow people to join unless they agreed in ad-
vance to kill puppies born with solid patches in their skin. They argued that only rigorous culling could maintain breed purity. But a spokesman for the Kennel Club’s general committee, Mr Michael Stockman, said he could not stomach the killing of healthy animals just to satisfy breeders’ requirements. They could be sold instead as ordinary pets, he said.
