Volleyball final

Western Heights (Rotorua) continued a fine record by beating Tauranga College, 30, in the boys’ final at the national secondary schools volleyball championships, which ended on Saturday at Pioneer Stadium. Western Heights, coached by Phil George, was clearly the best team at the tournament It has won the title four times in the last five years. In the play-off for third and fourth, Porirua College beat St Pauls (Dunedin), 3-0. The best of the Christchurch teams was Shirley

Boys High, which finished sixth. Hillmorton was seventh and Hornby eighth. In the girls’ section, Kawerau High School confirmed its favouritism with a 3-1 win over Otumoetai (Tauranga), giving the coach, Graham Walker, his first national title. Otahuhu defeated Mount ' Roskill, 3-0, to finish third. Of the Christchurch teams, Hillmorton finished seventh, Christchurch Girls High School thirteenth and Hornby fourteenth.
