Herbicide victims to wait longer

PA Wellington New Zealand Vietnam war veterans may still have to wait before receiving compensation for their exposure to the herbicide, Agent Orange. A United States court approved in nine separate decisions last week a $311.4 million settlement of Agent Orange lawsuits. The maximum award to any one veteran would be $22,144, most getting less. However, the New Zealand Returned Services Association’s general secretary, Mr Donald Quigley, said the decisions

were hard to understand as reported. Those decisions would be conveyed to the trust board lawyers of the Vietnam War Veterans’ Association and it might be some days before they were untangled, Mr Quigley said. “We will be most anxious to see that New Zealand interests have not been prejudiced at all,” he said. The V.W.V.A. set up a trust board at the request of a United States judge to work out a disposal plan for the disbursement of any compensation money.
