Family rivalry

Kevin Barry sen. and jun., who had a long and. fruitful association together in the boxing ring, will be in opposite comers from this Sunday. Kevin Barry jun. has formed his own club, Olympic, and will have three fighters in the Canterbury Trainers’ Association tournament at the Papanui Leagues’ Club.

Father and son will not have fighters opposing each other on Sunday, but Mr Barry sen. said they should be staring at each other from opposing corners at the next tournament.

He is looking forward to the meeting. “We had a long spell together in the same comer, so it will be

good to be on opposing sides. It should be interesting and create competition between the two of us. A bit of aggro doesn’t hurt.” The feature bout on Sunday will be a heavyweight contest between Richard Currie (Spencer Park Gym) and Nick Cunningham (Bell’s). David Platt, who earned his trainer’s licence under Kevin Barry sen., and who now runs the Spencer Park Gym, will also be making his debut as a trainer on Sunday. Currie is the first of Platt’s fighters to appear.

There will be 15 other amateur bouts on the programme, the majority of them novice events.
