‘Assault’ on power boards

PA Wellington The Opposition spokesman on energy, Mr Merv Wellington, yesterday accused the Government of planning “a concerted assault” on power boards by holding them responsible for power price increases after corporatisation.

Mr Wellington said an assertion by the Undersecretary of Finance, Mr de Cleene, that the abolition of power boards would benefit consumers was “a revelation of the. Labour Government’s plans.” Mr Wellington referred to a letter from Mr de Cleene to the Manawatu Oroua Electric Power Board in which he said he had “very serious doubts as to the necessity of power boards.”
