Company fined for pollution

PA' Auckland A Penrose company has been convicted in the District Court at Auckland, op two charges of polluting a waterway. South Auckland Drum Reconditioners, Ltd, was ordered by Judge Simpson to pay fines and costs exceeding $4600. The company admitted allowing industrial waste containing caustic soda to flow from its factory Into a pond system which drains into the Manukau Harbour.

Counsel for the Regional Water Board, Mrs Loretta Burnett, told the Court that in June a broken waste pipe at the factory was found to be discharging waste which

was flowing towards the pond system. In November, another discharge was discovered by a board inspector, Mrs Burnett said. Counsel for the company, Miss Brenda Walsh, said that since November it had spent $lO,OOO on improving the trade waste system at the factory. The Judge said the discharge had caused an extreme danger to aquatic life in the waterways. The public were justifiably concerned about such pollution.

In respect of the first count, the company was fined $l5OO and ordered to pay court costs of $55 and solicitors’ fees of $75. For the November dis’har'’' the

charge, _ae company was fined $2OOO with costs of $55 and $75. Payment of analysis fees of $866 was also ordered.
