Free-standing signs
Sir, —How can the Christchurch City Council draw up a new by-law to control the use of free-standing signs on footpaths when the footpath in Beresford Street, New Brighton, at the back of Woolworths, is still continually being blocked with crates, stacks of pallets, drums of meat offcuts, and trucks unloading etc., to the extent that pedestrians have to walk on the roadway to get past? This same council cannot deny I have not written to them
directly and also via letters to the editor on and off since 1982 over this matter to have this area of New Brighton cleaned up. Why attack the small shopkeeper when they have not the courage to attack Nathans?— Yours, etc., G. DAVIDSON. April 1, 1987.
[The Town Clerk, Mr J. H. Gray, replies: “The only complaints the council has received regarding the free-standing signs in Beresford Street have come from Mr G. Davidson via these columns, the last occurring in January, 1986. The situation has not changed in that the events complained of seem to occur with change of management. The matter has already been drawn to the attention of the new manager and checks are being made to ensure that the conditions do not continue. If there is ever any evidence of such misuse of the footpath, notification direct to this office would be appreciated. The by-laws regarding obstruction of footpaths are also being reviewed, but it must be accepted that during loading and unloading of goods there is likely to be some brief inconvenience.”]
