Art gallery

Sir,—l strongly agree with L. T. Taylor (April 13) that the Government Departmental Building in Worcester Street is the ideal place for the main city art gallery. The building, besides being one of the handsomest in Christchurch, and a worthy setting for the city’s art collection, could so easily become a natural meeting place for the people, because of the central situation. If a basement restaurant, offering attractive, affordable food, was incorporated in the design it could become a veritable Mecca for office workers, shoppers and tourists. And so civilised to be able to linger over a meal, coffee or a glass of wine to discuss the merits or otherwise of the various exhibitions. To give life to this splendid building would also provide the additional bonus of revitalising a very dreary corner of the Square. — Yours, etc., FREDA SCULLIN. April 1, 1987.
