Unemployment benefit
Sir, —In reply to James Baker (April 14) who calls the unemployed “dole bludgers,” I wonder if he realises that people who sling mud find that some of it clings to oneself. People, who call the unemployed bludgers but who are in receipt of Family Support or Family Benefit schemes should look in the mirror. I am lucky to be employed but do not bash those who are out of work through no Tault of their own.—Yours, etc., K. BROWN. April 14, 1987.
Sir, — I wonder if those who call for unemployment beneficiaries to give some form of community accountability in return for their benefit would be equally willing to require the same accountability from those who receive considerable benefits from unearned income from the stock market. It seems that some forms of so-called “bludging” are more respectable than others, and hence immune from public scrutiny. — Yours, etc., DAVID PIERCE. April 14, 1987.
