Promotion Council
Sir, — I thank Mr Dunstan, of the Canterbury Promotion Council, and Mrs J. Smith for their letters (April 13) following my comments on the funding of the C.P.C. However, my concerns have been justified in that funding required by the ratepayer accounts for 42 per cent of the C.P.C. budget. I am sure the farming community, reeling under the pain of Rogemomics, would be envious that a council that promotes a commercial industry would have its fingers that deep into the public purse. Regardless of the amount of money involved, there is a principle here, and the Akaroa County Council decision not to fund the C.P.C., in my opinion, was correct. The promotion council will have to learn to live within the income it creates, and that supplied to it by the tourist industry — Yours, etc., STEPHEN WICKHAM. April 15, 1987.
