Sea search called off
PA Hamilton A search for two Paeroa men missing since Thursday in the Firth of Thames was called off earlier this week. The missing fishing companions, Jack Selwyn Copeland, aged 64, and Mr Charles Stuart Borrie, aged 63, have not been seen since 8 a.m. on Thursday and are believed drowned. The men’s 3.5 m aluminium dinghy was recovered by the Auckland police launch Deodar at 3.45 p.m. on Saturday. Earlier in the day, an oar, fishing basket and other items belonging to the men had been found by the Deodar. Messrs Copeland and Borrie left Paeroa on Wednesday for Kareta, 30km north of Thames, to go fishing. They were last seen tending to fishing nets on Thursday morning. The sea, while calm on Thursday morning, became, rough later in the day. Searchers, including relatives, police, Civil Defence and search and rescue personnel, have combed the area from dawn until sunset since Friday. Aircraft from Ardmore and Thames have also been used.
