Reflections, reverses

Reflections and reverses is the theme of a dual performance at Easter week-end by Tinnitus. Tinnitus is a collective of Christchurch people interested in sound and visuals. The group staged a multi-media presentation on New Year’s Eve and this week-end’s performances are a continuation of the same format. The first of the two shows is on Saturday; the second on Monday. One of the group describes the first as the more “solid” performance. Saturday’s .show will be played to the audience of 99. Monday’s , show, by contrast, will ’invite the audience to be a part of the programme.

Both will be played in the same warehouse space (the address is available only on the tickets) and the group has set up the area to encourage movement by the audience. The shows are called "Mirror ov Easter,” and two reflections of the whole is the recurring theme. Two reflections together form a new result and this is what the group wants to explore. Two lighting rigs, a double stereo and two video systems will be used. The aim is to create an environment, especially, for the Monday performance. There the only lighting used for the dawn

show will be candles and sunrise. “We want to create an environment rather than a performance,” one of the group said. “We are expecting something from the audience through their exploration of the space and reaction to the continuous flow of visual and sound stimuli ... a moving crowd.” Part of the sound for the performances will be recorded; part will be live. This use of “reverses” is repeated in the use of video. Recorded videos will be shown and live images created with a video camera on the night. Tinnitus plans to use quite as lot of equipment in the performance. It has been given $350 by the Christchurch Community Arts Council towards the costs of the shows. Tickets, limited to 99 in number, will cost $9. The first of the performances will begin at 1 a.m. on Saturday and last for four and a half hours. The second will begin at 5.30 a.m. on Monday and last until 10 a.m. One ticket will get people into both shows.
