Italian coalition sought

NZPA-Reuter Rome The Christian Democrat Prime Minister designate, Oscar Luigi Scalfaro, began hurried consultations yesterday to try to form a Government that is expected to lead Italy into a Genera! Election in June.

Mr Scalfaro, who was Interior Minister in the outgoing coalition Government of the Socialist Prime Minister, Bettino Craxi, was given a mandate by President Francesco Cossiga on Saturday.

Political sources said a deep rift between the .Christian Democrats and the Socialists, which has widened during a S'/r week political crisis, was likely to prevent Mr Scalfaro rebuilding the five-party coalition that had governed Italy for more than three years. Mr Scalfaro, who is expected to report back to Mr Cossiga today or tomorrow, was likely to form a minority Government that would take Italy to elections a year ahead of schedule, the sources said.
