Computer seller convicted

PA Auckland A salesman who sold a $12,000 computer for $BOOO and kept the money was ordered to pay $2OO in court costs when he appeared in the District Court at Auckland.

Steven Douglas Gawne, aged 25 of Te Atatu, admitted a charge of theft by failing to account for the sale. His counsel, Mr Allan Roberts, said Gawne paid his former employer, Business World Computers, $12,000, the value of the machine. Gawne believed he would not be charged with theft if he paid back the money. Gawne submitted proof of such an agreement to Judge Maxwell.

Sergeant Huon Watt said Gawne kept the money from the sale of the computer and banked it in his own account. Judge Maxwell said he did not want to condone criminal activity, but he was curious why Gawne was charged when he had kept his side of the agreement with his former employer.

Because the money was repaid, Gawne would be convicted and ordered to come up for sentence in six months. If he stayed out of trouble, there would be no further penalty.

The Judge ordered Gawne to pay $2OO court costs.
