Municipal president elected
PA Palmerston North The Mayor of Ashburton, Mr Geoffrey Geering, has been elected president of the ' Municipal Association. He was elected as the association’s last president at its conference in Palmerston North. Delegates earlier voted unanimously in favour of merging with the Counties’ Association to form a joint local government association. Mr Geering, aged 54, said his role over the next year would be as a communicator, seeking agreement with members on details of the merger, and keeping them in touch. He won election as president ahead of the Mayor of Upper Hutt, Mr Rex Kirton, who will continue as a vice-president with New Plymouth’s Mayor, Mr David Lean. Others elected to the association’s executive were: Mrs Wynn Hoadley (Takapuna), Mr John Keaney (Rotorua), Mrs Eve Poole (Invercargill), Messrs Jim Elder (Tokoroa), Bruce McNaughton (New Lynn), Max Short (Pukekohe), Kevan Lawrence (Waiuku), Bruce Pagan (Bluff), George Smith (Lawrence), and Sir John Thorn (Port Chalmers).
