Australian workless increase
NZPA Canberra Australia’s unemployment rate jumped to 8.4 per cent in March from 8.2 per cent in February in seasonally adjusted terms. The Australian Bureau of Statistics said seasonally adjusted unemployment increased by 18,800 to 650,700 between Febru-. ary and March. The A.B.S. said the unexpected increase came in spite of strong employment growth. However, there was a marginal increase in the participation rate, which measures the number of people looking for work, from 62 per cent in January' and February to 62.2 per cent in March. On an unadjusted basis, Queensland once again recorded the highest unemployment rate with 11 per cent, followed by Tasmania with 9.9 per cent and New South Wales and South Australia both with 9.5 per cent Western Australia’s unemployment rate was 8.5 per cent and the Australian Capital Territory’s was 7.5 per cent.
Victoria recorded the lowest unemployment rate of any State with 7.2 per cent, while unemployment in the Northern Territory was 6.6 per cent.
