Masters golf tourney
PA Auckland Auckland needs only to tie with Wellington this morning to retain the Freyberg Rosebowl at the national masters’ golf tournament at Titirangi. Both teams are unbeaten, but Auckland is ahead 23-20-14 on individual wins. Taranaki shattered Otago’s dream of winning the event with a 3-2 victory yesterday morning. Otago’s woes continued in the afternoon. At one stage it looked as though the result of the rubber against Auckland would have to wait until this morning. As light faded, the Auckland No. 5, Norm Brown, was back in the clubhouse after beating Alec Denniston, 3 and 2. That win was vital to Auckland. Tom Stoud, the Auckland No. 3, beat Toureil, 5 and 3, while the No. 4, Bruce Stevens, lost to Ken Thompson.
On the seventeenth tee Vic Pirihi and Colin Coloquohon decided it was too dark to continue and called it a day with Pirihi 1-up. “We couldn’t see the flag on the 16th green, so it wasn’t much good going on,” Pirihi said. Ken Hankin (Auckland) and Ray Kearns, both No. 1, carried on through the gloom. Hankin winning, 1-up, to give Auckland the rubber. “We couldn’t see the pin, so we just fired at the green blind,” Hankin said. Wellington trounced Bay of Plenty, 4-1, in the morning and then had anxious moments waiting for the last pair to finish before beating Waikato. 3-2. Northland, the surprise of the tournament, beat Canterbury, 3-2, in the morning but went down, 2-3, to Bay of Plenty in the afternoon. Canterbury beat Poverty Bay, 4-1, in the afternoon.
