Random stopping
PA Wellington The Ministry of Transport will step up its random stopping campaign at Easter.
The assistant chief traffic superintendent, Mr Henry Gore, said the Ministry would “pull out all the stops” with particular emphasis on high speed, intoxication, and faulty overtaking.
Every available officer would be on duty, Mr Gore said. Instead of working on traffic management, such as inner-
city clearways, they would be diverted to patrols. The campaign will be a national one and will last for the Easter holiday period — from 4 p.m. on Thursday, April 16, to 8 a.m. on Tuesday, April 21.
Extra patrols would work on the Saturday night, Mr Gore said. On average, 12 people have died each Easter in the 1980 s and about 260 people have been injured. Last Easter, 15 died and 300 were injured.
