Mount Pleasant suffers squash reverse

Mount Pleasant, which achieved a clean sweep of trophies last season, suffered a shock reverse when the women’s open grade Interclub squash competition began at the Lancaster Park courts on Tuesday evening. Sumner won the over-all contest by the smallest possible margin, 107 points to 106, after the rubbers were tied, 2-2, and the games, 8-8. Last season Mount Pleasant went through the entire 15 weeks of competition without a loss. For Sumner, Lorraine Sutherland pulled off the individual upset of the night with a praiseworthy fivegame win over her opposing No. 2, Ann Harliwich, who held match ball in the fourth set. Harliwich played 15 matches and won the lot last season.

Saskia O’Brien also surprised with the ease of her victory over Sue Mullaly, who had the better of her opponent in the 1986 competition. The No. Is, Carolyn Viggers (Mount Pleasant) and Justine Marriott (Sumner), had an excellent match, Viggers prevailing in a hard-fought fivesetter.

St Andrew’s, back in the top women’s grade after two seasons away, extracted maximum points against Christchurch while the clash between the two Lancaster Park teams was notable for the fine play of the young newsomer, Belinda Saunders. The men’s open grade competition opened at the Christchurch club courts with Lancaster Park the only team to achieve a 10-pointer. Paul Viggers, Brett Hibbert and Michael Penman all won

in straight games but the battle at the bottom of the order between Peter Bremmers (Lancaster Park) and Frank Young (Christchurch II) was a gallerypleaser. The tenacious Young, mixing the orthodox with the audacious, saved several match balls in the fifth set and hit one unpayable corkscrew, but at the end Bremmers virtually brought him to his knees. Last year’s Blank trophyWilson shield winner, Burnside, also started on a winning note, its only loss being John Knight’s demolition of Michael Allred. In the top position Bumside’s . Nigel Lloyd had a grand win over Craig Hibbert, who lost his edge a little in the last two games. High School Old Boys, with the new Canterbury cricket selector, Lyn Sparks, recruited as its top player, had a 3-1 win over Christchurch Football, still awaiting the arrival in Christchurch of the Southern Districts representative, Bob Foster. The Christchurch I side, bolstered by the return of Rod Hayes to its ranks after five years, had a solid win though Wayne. Seebeck had to come from behind to beat Stu Doak, and Fred Williams found the promising junior, Tristan franklin, far too sharp. Results:— MEN High School Old Boys 8, Christchurch Football 2 . L.
