Jail siege continues

NZPA-PA Belfast Protestant Loyalists at Magilligan jail, County Londonderry, were still holding a Catholic inmate and prison officer hostage last evening. A Free Presbyterian minister, the Rev. Wesley McDowell, is also with the prisoners, but it still is not clear whether he is trying to mediate between the men and prison authorities or being held against

his will. The prison officer and the inmate were seized by 28 Loyalist prisoners during a church service being conducted by Mr McDowell. The Loyalists, who have barricaded themselves in one of the jail’s wings, are demanding an end to the Government’s policy of integrating them with Republicans in dining halls, exercise yards and re.creation areas.
