Fighting resumes at Basra
NZPA-Reuter London Iran said yesterday that its forces had inflicted heavy casualties on Iraqi troops in fresh fighting near, the Iraqi port city of Basra. The Iranian news agency, 1.R.N.A., said the new attack was launched on Monday night west of the “fish canal,” a defensive line built by the Iraqis on the east bank of the Shatt al-Arab waterway.
"In this operation ... heavy casualties and damage were inflicted on the Iraqi troops,” the agency reported.
Iran launched an offensive in January towards Basra, but there have been few reports of fighting in the area for several weeks.
