Residents tape Fendalton Road

Fendalton Road residents have strung red and orange tape across property frontages, corner fences, and trees to show what they see as the effects of widening the road. - The chairman of the Association of Fendalton Residents, Mr Earl Bennett,'said the tape along property frontages mdritod. where boundary would be moved to if the Waimairi District Council’s optiontourfor the road widening was adopted. Option four, a four-lane

road with a' narrow median strip and intermittent parking bays, was one of five options for the widening of Fendalton Road considered by the council. Mr Bennett said that those trees bearing tape lengths would fall within the road reserve under option four, and could be in danger of removal. be moved back 5m to allow for parking, and the residents have erected orange mesh in that position.

The taping is a build-up to the public hearing on proposals for Fendalton Road, to be held on Tuesday, April 14. The residents’ association has employed a Wellington traffic design engineer, Mr Peter McCombs, to present submissions on its behalf, as a technical expert, to the Waimairi District Council. 1 ■, s-< Mr Burnett said that the tape was intended to show the people living on and near Fendalton Road, and those passing along it, the real extent of the restruc-

turing plans. Many people I found it difficult to under- i stand a printed diagram. The tape will probably remain in place until after the public hearing. Option four is the option being recommended for adoption by the council. ' - ■. < The residents’ association would prefer option 'one'* for'the road widening, as this would mean the „ least change tothe road. This option had two of the; < four lanes acting as parking lanes in off-peak

hours, and no median strip. A Fendalton Riding member of the council, Cr Barbara Stewart, said she thought the taping was an “excellent idea.” She said the markings gave people a “visual idea” of where the road could go and was a good lobbying point for . the residents. Although the hearing was set for April 14, Cr Stewart said this was likely to be the first of a series to consider residents’ views on the roadwidening.
