Driver charged

A driver who narrowly escaped injury when the cab of his truck burst into flames last month was yesterday charged with wilfully setting fire to it. John Frederick Thomas Cawkill, aged 28, was charged in the District Court with wilfully setting fire to his Leyland truck, owned by Fat Man (Canterbury), Ltd, at Belfast on March 25.

When he initially appeared in court last week Cawkill (Mr Mark McDonald) was charged with the theft of $5206 from his then employer. Sergeant Max South asked yesterday that this sum be amended to $9957. No pleas were entered to the charges and Cawkill was remanded on bail by Judge Erber to April 14.
