C.U.C. seeks less from member councils
The Canterbury United Council will reduce its financial request to constituent councils 5 per cent, says its chief executive, Mr Malcolm Douglass.
Mr Douglass told “The Press” yesterday that the council’s staff had gone through the 1987-88 budget draft and cut spending in certain areas. The council has asked its members for comment on the draft. Those comments were all received late last week. “One or two of the councils have not had their committee recommendations confirmed yet but most of them have picked up the recommendation that went before the United Council on February 25,” he said.
That recommendation asked the United Council to restrict its salaries and special services budget to $32,000 and try to hold its over-all levy increase to within 14 per cent.
The council’s staff had reviewed every item of expenditure listed in its budget fr lis '
judget ror th: financial year “and a new proposal will be put before the councillors.”
“It (the budget proposal) comes close to the request from the constituent councils.” The United Council’s first budget draft sought an average 20 per cent increase in the levy over last financial year’s contributions.
The new levy proposal will be discussed by the United Council before being sent to member councils as a final figure.
