Old Boys’ No. 8 back

The injury-hit High School Old Boys senior rugby team received a pleasant surprise this week when its No. 8 from last year, Nigel Ward, arrived back in Christchurch. He was also the Town No. 8.

Ward played the offseason in France, and the last word Old Boys had from him was that he was going to stay on there for the summer. However, he is back, and keen to

Play. He will have to wait 14 days, the residential qualification, before he can appear in a competition match. His versatility will be welcomed by Old Boys. For his French club, Grauhlet, Ward played both as a loose forward and as a three-quarter, and was a top try-scorer in both roles. He has indicated that he would quite like to play on the wing.

Old Boys have been hard hit by pre-season injuries, and two who are not expected to be available until after Ward is free to play are the Leggat brothers. The halfback, Richard, has a shoulder injury and James, who has switched from first five-eighths to fullback, damaged a hamstring in the final minute df training last Thursday night.
