Addington market Big yardings keep prices steady
Prices generally remained Steady for big yardings of prime sheep and cattle at the Addington market yesterday. • Good-cutting ram lambs regularly exceeded $3O, and good butchers’ ewes continued to sell well at $l4 to $lB. The beef market reImained on a par with recent -rates, although the buying power weakened slightly in the closing stages. In the pig section, prime -stock met a restricted de;mand, while a big yarding of 'store pigs had a satisfactory sale. Prime lambs Another strong demand for most types of lambs resulted -in another solid prime lamb market Only a handful of lambs failed to reach $2O, and most light-to-medium stock made between $2O and $24. Good-cutting ram lambs again sold well and several pens of woolly stock fetched more than $35. The yarding of 2164 lambs - was almost 500 more than ; last week. The yarding of 364 head was more than double the 173 offered last week. Lightweight cattle continued to sell well and most prices ranged from 200 c to 215 c a kilogram. Although two very heavy steers exceeded $lOOO, the heavy end of the market suffered slightly from the ease in buying power, particularly in the later stages. An Angus cross steer from Miss Jean Anderson, Charteris Bay, topped the market at $1052 and a Friesian steer from Mrs D. E. Pavelka, Oxford, made $lO4O. A big Friesian heifer from Cranbrook Farm, Irweli, reached $706 and a Hereford cross cow from Hitchin Hills, Hurunui, sold at $632. Most Friesian heifers ranged from $34 to $7O, beef cross bulls $lO4 to $124, and beef cross heifers $96 to $ll6. Prime pigs A big yarding of prime pigs had another slow sale. Prices were slightly easier than last week, and very few heavy pigs fetched more than $l6O. Buyers were selective and only the best-cutting pigs attracted a good level of competition. Good-quality light and medium pork sold well to reach $l2O. A big yarding of choppers drew the weakest demand for several weeks. Only the top pigs reached $2OO and a large proportion of the yarding sold between $llO and $l3O. Values were:— Light pork, $9O to $lO5. Medium to heavy pork, $lOB to $l2O. Light to medium bacon, $25 to $l4O. Heavy bacon, to $l6O. Store choppers, $7O to $lOO. Light choppers, $llO to $l3O. Heavy choppers, $l6O to $2lO. Stare pigs With the help of outside buyers, the store pig market again successfully cleared a big yarding of pigs. The quality of stock was generally very good and there was a good selection of all types of Pigs. Values were:— Small weaners, $37 to $45. Good weaners, $47 to $55. Slips and small stores, $5B to $7O. Large stores, to $BO. Unfinished pork, to $lO6.
