Deposed Lesotho leader dies
NZPA-Reuter Harare The former Lesotho Prime Minister, Chief Leabua Jonathan, has died from stomach cancer, according to official sources in the country’s capital, Maseru. Chief Jonathan, who was 73, ruled the tiny kingdom for 20 years before his overthrow in a military coup in January, last year. He died in a hospital on Sunday in the South
African capital, Pretoria, where he was admitted on Saturday, said the sources. Chief Jonathan became Prime Minister when Lesotho gained independence from Britain in 1966 and ruled the kingdom — which is completely surrounded by and economically dependent on South Africa — with an iron hand until his overthrow. He suspended the constitution in 1970 when his ruling Basotholand National Party appeared to be losing a General Election. He then ruled with a hand-picked Parliament for the next 15 years.
