Masters golf event
PA Auckland Auckland made a good start in the Freyberg Masters inter-provincial teams golf tournament at Titirangi yesterday, beating Poverty Bay, 4!4 to j*. Bruce Stevens beat Artie Raymond, 3 and 1, Ken Hankin had a good 4 and 3 win over Eric Gordon, Vic Pirihi overwhelmed Peter Rouse. 7 and 6, and Norm Brown beat Brian Morrissey, 3 and 2. Tasman caused the surprise of the opening round, beating the strong Canterbury team, 3-2. Northland also made a useful start, beating Taranaki,
3*4 to Yt- Waikato shared its rubber with Aorangi, and Bay of Plenty was beaten, 3-2, by Otago. Results: Auckland Poverty Bay ft; WelUngton 3*4, Southland 1!4; Northland 3*4, Taranaki IJ4; Manawatu-Wanganul 2*4, Hawke’s Bay 2*4; Waikato 2*4, Aorangi 2ft; Otago 3, Bay of Plenty 2. Tasman 3, Canterbury 2 (Tasman names first): M. Thompson beat M. Palmer, 2 and 1; C. Scammell lost to L. Starr, 4 and 3; D. Beggs lost to G. Turner, 2 and 1; T. Joseph beat W. Tucker, 1-up; K. Downie beat J. McCormick, 1-up.
