Men remanded without plea on arson charges
PA Gisborne Three men jointly charged with two arsons and an attempted arson in Ruatoria last year were remanded without plea to April 15 when they appeared in the District Court at Gisborne yesterday. Judge Hole told the Court a date would be set on that day for the taking of depositions. Anthony James Tuhou, aged 19, an unemployed
forestry worker, and Jonathan Stuart Shane McClutchie, aged 18, an unemployed shedhand, were represented by Mr Wattie Mackay. Mr Denys Barry represented Cyrus Edward Kennedy, aged 19, a farmhand.
The defendants are jointly charged with the arson of Joe’s Bookshop in Ruatoria township, the arson of Ruatoria Motors and the attempted arson of Carlyle Drapers. All the alleged offences took
place on August 22 last year, and the businesses were on Ruatoria’s Main Road.
Sergeant Chester Haar said the police did not oppose bail, but they sought a “substantial surety” and a reporting clause in the terms of their bail.
The Judge ordered that the men be remanded on bail on their own bond of $2500, with surety of the same amount.
