‘Red hot crevasse’ on White Island

PA Tauranga A team of D.S.I.R. geologists will visit White Island today to investigate a “red hot gaping hole” in the main crater floor. The 60-metre-deep crevasse was discovered last week by geologists visiting the active Bay of Plenty volcano. A D.S.I.R. geologist, Dr lan Nairn, of Rotorua, said a full surveillance of the crater would be made today. The hole had formed in

the congress vent which had been erupting ash and fine volcanic material for four months. A helicopter pilot, Mr lan Johnson, said the Helicopter Line in Rotorua landed on the island on Sunday and said a lot of ash had been thrown from the vent during the last week. Dr Nairn said there had not been a significant eruption since January 25, when the congress vent first came to light.
