Trans-Alps rugby league series
The first of a series of trans-Alps rugby league fixtures will be played next Saturday when Eastern Suburbs, of Christchurch, travels to the West Coast to meet Runanga.
The matches will continue for 10 weeks, bring-
ing together the clubs which have the bye in their respective domestic competitions.
Because of the nature of the east-west confrontation there can be no outright winner. The West Coast has five premier sides, Canterbury nine,
and it has not been possible to devise a satisfactory method of deciding an over-all victor. Southern club rugby league supremacy will still be decided when the respective champions of
Canterbury and West Coast meet for the Thacker Shield late in the season. In the meantime, the trans-Alps games will keep otherwise bye-bound teams active and promote an even closer relationship between the two provinces.
