Exchange student sent home
PA Auckland A Rotary exchange student, Anja Hiager, who left Auckland for her home in West Germany at the week-end, said she would have bitter-sweet memories of her ninemonth stay in the country. The 18-year-old Otahuhu College pupil has been sent home because Rotary says she broke its code of behaviour.
Anja believes her yearlong stay was cut short because she dated. Mr John Robinson, chairman of Auckland district youth exchange committee, and Mr Basil Silcock, president of Otahuhu Rotary Club, were at the airport to ensure Anja’s departure went smoothly. They refused to say what aspect of the code she had infringed.
Mr Silcock said Anja’s host families, counsellor and local members of Rotary had done their best to see she was a successful exchange student. “But she continued to break the rules,” he said. Miss Hiager said she really liked the country but did not appreciate what she termed the Strict and conservative nature of Rotary.
