Audain’s top 10-mile time not enough
By TOM BRIDGMAN NZPA staff correspondent Washington Anne Audain broke the women's world best time for a 10-mile race but still finished second in the Nike Cherry blossom event at Washington yesterday. The first three women to finish all beat the record time of 53mln 9s set last year in the race by Rosa Mota, of Portugal. The Australian, Lisa MarUn, the Commonwealth Games marathon gold medallist, held off Audain throughout yesterday's race to win in 52min 235. Audain’s time was 52 min 31s, while the third-placed Carla Buerskens, of the Netherlands, clocked 53min. Martin said after the race that she was prepared for a challenge from Audain. “I was trying to keep Just a little bit in reserve so if she came by me I'd have some-
thing left to challenge her with,” she said. However Audain said she went into the race knowing she was suffering from the same injured hip muscle which affected her running tn 1984. . “It took me a year to recover from that then, so I just hope It will not be the same this time,” she said. “In a way this was a make or break race. I was sore coming into ft but thought I might be able to run It out.” Audain, while very pleased with the record-breaking time, said the race was frustrating for her. “I let her get a break on me at the start and got locked into a set pace. I was the same distance behind her all the way,” she said. The men's race was won by Jpn Sinclair of Fort Collins, Colorado, with a time of 46min 475, his winter spent training in New Zealand showing to good advantage.
