Animal rights

Sir, —I would say to Professor Clark that experiments by one species of animal upon other species is so inherently wrong that only the most abstruse reasoning could defend it. The Gary Knapp bill is a step on the way to correcting the injustice of animal experimentation. The bill wants all experiments not only recorded but published yearly for public scrutiny, as is done overseas. It wants the L.D. 50 test abolished. It would prohibit using animals’ eyes for testing products — the Draize test. It would prohibit behavioural and psychological tests. It would insist that 50 per cent of Ethical Advisory Committee members not be connected with experimentation. These are all positive steps to give animals some basic protection which should have the support of the public and parliamentarians. — Yours, etc., J. SHARP. March 27, 1987.
