Jewish identity

Sir, —The "Daily Telegraph” article about the Jews by Oliver Letwin (March 31) gives the distinct impression that they are a race. This is just sentimental rubbish and quite untrue. They may have been a group of people with similar anthropological characteristics 3000 or even 2000 years ago, but after the fall of Jerusalem in A.D.70 they were scattered into the diaspora (dispersion) and eventually interbred with Caucasians, Latins, Hispanics, etc. The European Jews became Ashkenazim (or German Jews) and the Mediterranean Jews became Sephardim. How can Jews be a distinct race today when you can get black Jews like Sammy Davis, jun., and white Celtic Jews' like Morris Yaokov, a former Israeli Ambassador to New Zealand? The Jews are, properly, a religious peoplehood, not a race. — Yours, etc., TED HICKS. 5 ; March 31, 1987.
