State rental home tally peaks

PA Wellington The number of State rental homes is now the highest in the Housing Corporation’s history, says the Minister of Housing, Mr Goff. Announcing figures for the end of the corporation’s financial year, Mr Goff said that the total stock of 60,600 properties had been reached after a long period of decline. The State housing waiting list had been cut by nearly a thousand compared with a year ago

because more than 7000 families had been allocated homes during the financial year. In the same period more than 10,000 low-in-come families had received corporation loans to buy their first homes, the highest number in a decade, he said. “Part of what we have achieved is due to the fact that lifelong subsidies are no longer given to higher income tenants or mortgagors,” he said.
