‘Cautious optimism’ on disarmament
PA Wellington A recent United Nations disarmament conference had a mood of “cautiouus optimism” about progress towards world disarmament, according to a New Zealand delegate, Mrs Laurie Sales, of Wellington. Mrs Sales is vice-presi-dent of the United Nations Association of New Zealand, and chairman of the National Consultative Committee on Disarmament.
She attended the United Nations regional conference for the World Disarmament Campaign in Peking with other representatives from Asia and the Pacific.
The optimism stemmed largely from the new thinking evident in the Soviet Union, Mrs Sales said. “If the present U.S.S.R. measures are to be taken seriously this will lead to more confidence and dispelling of suspicion. Once we have that, we might move towards more positive treaties and real reductions of arms,” she said. '. . There was now real hope that disarmament negotiations in Geneva would reach some settlement. Mrs Sales said there was strong interest in New Zealand’s antinuclear stance, especially from the Japanese.
