Obituary Mr Tom McDonald
PA Napier A pioneer of the New Zealand wine industry, Mr Thomas (Tom) Bayne McDonald, has died suddenly .at his Taradale home. He was 80. , : Mr McDonald' . established McDonald’s Wines in 1922 which amalgamated with McWilliams wines in 1962. He was a past president of the Wine Institute of New Zealand and one of only four fellows of the institute. He served as president of the Hawke’s Bay Winemakers’ Association for 40 years. . _ ,
Mr McDonald received Rotary International’s highest award, a Paul Harris fellowship, served as chairman on the Hawke’s Bay Education Board and as a member of the Hawke’s Bay Harbour Board. Mr McDonald was bom and educated in Taradale. He started work with a winemaker, Bart Steirmetz, at the age of 15 and at 21 took over the business and changed the winery’s name to McDonalds. He was production director of McWilliams Wines retired in 1975.
Mr McDonald spent his life in Taradale but was widely known in national and international viticultural circles. He was well known for his gold medal winning cabernet Sauvignon and pinot Chardonnay. The McDonald family also established the ; McDonald Transport Com- - pany, McDonald’s Supermarket, and the Waiohiki Sand and Shingle Company (now Napier-Tara-dale Shingle Company). Mr McDonald is survived by his wife and two dangers. ./ 4
