Dunedin tram for display
After five years of hard work, members of the Ferrymead Tramway Historical Society will celebrate the restoration of Dunedin Tram No. 11 this week-end.
Members of the society and workers employed under Labour Department schemes have spent more than 10,000 hours restoring the dilapidated tram to its former glory. The train will be "reo-
pened” by the Minister of Tourism, Mr Moore, at a function at Ferrymead Historic Park tomorrow. Dunedin No. 11 was one of fhe original fleet of electric trams used by the
Dunedin City Council. After serving the council for many years, the fully enclosed single saloon car was used as a shed for 20 years. None of the tram’s mechanical equipment
survived, and the society had to look as far afield as Melbourne and Brussels to find pieces such as handbrake gear and motors to complete the restoration. A feature of the restored tram is the red and cream exterior paint which has been lined and lettered with gold leaf. The newly restored tram will join the existing tram fleet at Ferrymead.
