M.P. bets both ways

Wellington reporter In true gambling spirit, the Under-Secretary of Finance, Mr de Cleene, last evening voted both for and against a move to delay the introduction of Lotto. The Opposition, during the reporting back to Parliament of the Gaming and Lotteries Amendment Bill, moved that it be referred back to a select committee for further consideration. A vote was forced on the amendment, and when members filed back

into the House, the Speaker, Dr Wall, said he faced certain difficulties. A member’s name was on both lists. “Schizophrenia,” called Sir Robert Muldoon. Mr de Cleene then owned up. He said he did not mean to have a dollar each way but had followed into the lobby “what I thought were liberal people.” Parliament allowed his name to be struck off the list which had recorded his vote to delay Lotto’s introduction. . >
