Rubbish fires

Sir, —In reply to P. V. Neary (March 24), there seems to be a fixation regarding smoke. The smell of smoke is not harmful and no one is compelled to inhale smoke. Burying garden rubbish is unwise. Bug infested vegetation, noxious weed and blight should all be burnt. In view of A.I.D.S. all condoms, diapers, etc., should not be put in rubbish disposal bags for burial but should be destroyed by fire. Rubbish bags interred in the ground could breed disease for years to come. The Clean Air Society should disband and form a Healthy Environment League and concern themselves more with scum and rotting debris in the side channels, diesel fumes at nose level, and the wide problems of plastic pollution.— Yours, etc., M. A. HOGAN. March 27, 1987.
